Had my shadowing session at the hospice last night. I was actually quite nervous and could think of loads of excuses why I should not go from thinking I have a cold to its not really the right kind of volunteering work I want to do. Anyway I didn't put it off I went along.
Met up with Barbara who also had another volunteer shadowing her. So there we were, Barbara like some mother hen, Jan who is a seasoned volunteer and me a novice although seasoned in the ways of dying and hospice.
First of all I must get myself a little notepad so I can make notes about which patient is having which meal.
Secondly its interesting to note that unless there were volunteers there would not be much of a service. It will be our or my job to serve all the suppers, chat to the patients, cook them alternative light meals if necessary, change flowers, clean up and load and unload the dishwasher and culterly and crockery etc. It sounds a lot but for three people there was not enough work to do and I guess for 1 it might be quite busy but then at least the time will go quickly.
The patients were in all states from being able to move slowly and able to eat and chat to just sleeping and lying comotose. There was one old man with his granddaughter who was busy chatting away about his youth, telling her all kinds of stories just like my dad did with the boys. That was sweet and it would be good to see him again but I fear the next time I go he'll be dead which feels a bit weird.
Anyway I enjoyed it all and am looking forward to doing it on my own although a bit worried I might get all the meals muddled and not be able to cope with the dishwasher ...keep telling myself if Barbara and Jan can do it then so can I!!
Chris came for tea last night which was lovely. He looks so handsome in his suit and he told us about their holiday to Slovnia with Fiona which sounded nice and relaxing although he said it was too relaxing. I think he needed more clubs and bars and yoof.
We've all been snowed in today. The whole of the south east has ground to a halt and even Richard has not gone in altough poor Phil had to walk in. It all looked pretty but the poor birds could'nt get to their food so I had to clear all the snow and ice for them.
I sent everyone including Robo and Mr V a text showing my snowman. Robo replied by telling me he couldn;t get into work and so had played snowballs with his boys whereas Mr V just asked where the vids were? I replied back to him with the following 'I'm fine thanks how are you?' So far heard nothing back lol
